A Temporary Work Visa for Canada is a combination of a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) and a Work Permit. With a TRV, you are allowed to stay in Canada for 6 months or less, while the Work Permit for Canada grants you permission to take a job within Canada if you are from a foreign country. A Canadian work permit allows you to work under a specific employer (employer-specific work permit) or with any employer (open work permit) in Canada. As a foreign national, you’ll require a work permit before working in Canada, with a few exceptions.
Work Visa Options
Canada enables foreign nationals to come and work in Canada under several work permit options. Most work permits require a job offer from a Canadian employer, while some require the individual to have a Canadian connection, such as through education, refugee status, or spousal sponsorship.
Employer Compliance and LMIA
Canadian employers must adhere strictly to immigration laws, particularly concerning work permits. Most job offers to foreign nationals require a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), which demonstrates that no Canadian citizen or permanent resident was available to fill the position. This ensures that foreign workers complement, rather than replace, the local workforce.
