What is a Study Permit?

Eligibility Requirements for a Study Permit

To be eligible for a study permit, you must meet several important requirements, including:

Letter of Acceptance: You must have a letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL): In some cases, you may also need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), which confirms that your program of study meets provincial requirements. This document may be required by the province where your DLI is located, especially for programs that require specific provincial approval.
Proof of Financial Support: You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees, living expenses for yourself and any family members accompanying you, and return transportation costs.
No Criminal Record: You must not have a criminal record. A police clearance certificate may be required as part of your application.
Good Health: Depending on your country of origin and intended length of stay, you may need to undergo a medical examination to prove that you are in good health.
Intent to Leave Canada: You must provide proof of ties to your home country, demonstrating that you will return once your study permit expires. This does not prevent you from applying for an extension or permanent residence in the future if eligible.

After You Apply to come to study in Canada: Next Steps

Once you have submitted your study permit application, IRCC will process it and provide a decision. Processing times can vary, so it is essential to apply well in advance of your intended start date.

After Submission:

Decision on Your Application: You will receive a notification of whether your application has been approved or refused. If approved, you will receive a Port of Entry (POE) letter of introduction, which you must present upon arrival in Canada.
Prepare for Arrival: After receiving approval, you should prepare for your arrival in Canada. Ensure you have your POE letter, your passport, and any other relevant documents ready to present to the border services officer.

Working While You Study

One of the advantages of studying in Canada is the ability to work while you study. International students with a valid study permit can work part-time during the academic year and full-time during scheduled breaks, such as summer vacations. This allows you to gain valuable work experience while also helping to support your studies financially.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): After completing your studies, you may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, which allows you to stay in Canada and work for up to three years, depending on the length of your program.
